sci-arc_2gbx-sp07_robust morphologies

Instructor: Peter Testa

"the intercalated urban system extends to the integration of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal movement at a range of speeds and viscosities. movement patterns develop as an emergent system of organization, and in combination with tectonic ordering systems, challenge the tyranny of centralized core and associated striation of space. this urban topology implies seamless connectivity through circulation patterns, extending into and reprogramming adjacent systems and spaces within the moma. through the analysis of these circulation patterns, and the implementation of switch-stops and a distributed core, morphological patterns are extracted to inform the overall structure, organization, and programming of the tower."

The logic of the project is not working on the idea of building types, but developing a concept of "species". Create a new dynamic logic that allows the project and the city develop a relationship over the game and joy. The project is not based on an organization of functions but in the generation of sensations through cells that are multiplying producer for the building. The addition also operates as a prosthesis, adding, transforming but not completely replacing, producing a dialogue between history and the past. Museums, has been said, are the cathedrals of today, this is a concept that has concerned us since we are convinced that the project is a new icon for the city but also a place where the interior creates an atmosphere that involves the visitor. We propose that space are continuous, and try not to emphasize the separation between exhibitions and service areas. The art of digital media and is in constant evolution and transformation, we wish the building will be an element of dialogue with the art and not just a framework. The ambitions are clear, to produce beauty in terms of future and not a condition that we already know, a city like San Sebastian always is surprising, such is life such is love ...

sci-arc_vs-s08_mega.church

Instructor: Hernan Diaz Alonso/ Benjamin Bratton
Project Team: Steven Ma/ Thorne Ransom

The contemporary Megachurch is sometimes an opportunistic adaptive re-use, taking over arenas, warehouses even parking lots as needed, and always inheriting some of the atmosphere of these. As forms, they have scale but often not sufficient sacrality; they don’t achieve the same resolution of political and sensual grandeur of Cathedrals of the past. This project intends to give a more contemporary, more official, and more fantastic form to these emergent political bodies.

By studying Gothic religious architecture through the lens of new technologies in considering their success in marrying the social, spiritual, political and sensual into a single design. Immerse ourselves in local mega churches to directly empathize with the needs of this varied, complex client base. Like many other masters, Gaudi understood that religious architectures should be pronounced as transcending the technology of its production, something is invited to appear - what god then is now the phantasic mutation.
